Introduction: Worldwide, diabetes is a common metabolic disorder that creates many complications. Nowadays a mobile-based application could be included in the therapeutic approaches of self-management.
Aim: This study presents the development of a mobile application named Diabetes 2 Learn for people with type 2 diabetes inside the Greek population.
Methods: Google Play and App Store were examined for their apps on diabetes and their capabilities. Extending the capabilities and features of such apps and adapting for the Greek population, a mobile app was created. Java programming language was used to create the app, which is uploaded to Google Play for Android Operating System (AOS), because of its popularity and efficiency.
Results: The Diabetes 2 Learn app for type 2 diabetes can be downloaded from Google Play to mobile devices with AOS, which is widespread in smartphones. The users can read information about diabetes and its complications, diagnosis, and symptoms, as well as dietary recommendations regarding Mediterranean diet and physical activity. Furthermore, the app can record blood glucose measurements and offers mg/dl graph support. The users also have quiz options to evaluate their level of knowledge on diabetes.
Conclusions: This software application was created for people with type 2 diabetes to help them manage their care by monitoring blood glucose, checking their knowledge on diabetes and benefitting from the advantages of adhering to the Mediterranean diet. The app has also been included in a study protocol which is in progress in Greek public hospitals.
