Introduction: The question of the relationship between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease is still open to debate. Recent, exciting and preliminary evidence suggests that vitamin D may play a role in the occurrence of cardiovascular events.
Materials and methods: Patients of both sexes, involving 290 patients recruited between September and March, aged between 40 and 80 years, with type 2 diabetes mellitus after informed consent. We excluded patients with pathologies responsible for hypovitaminosis D. We studied the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and vitamin D level, then an experimental therapeutic test over a period of 24 weeks was performed in 42 patients divided at random in two groups: a group under vitamin D 3 and a control group without treatment. The purpose of this test is to determine the effect of vitamin D 3 supplementation on risk factors for cardiovascular risks; Diastolic systolic blood pressure, lipid profile (HDL, LDL, TG, and cholesterol).
Results: We found no significant relationship between vitamin D levels and cardiovascular risk factors.
Conclusion: Numerous studies have demonstrated the link between hypovitaminosis D and cardiovascular risk. Until the role of vitamin D is explored at the cardiovascular level, it is possible that more emphasis is placed on vitamin D levels, especially in people at risk, including the elderly, obese and those with diabetes.
