Objective: The finding of new biomarkers is needed to have an early diagnosis of breast cancer. In this study we evaluated serum levels of carboxylated osteocalcin (OC) and uncarboxylated osteocalcin(UcOC), CRP as a diagnostic biomarker for breast cancer.
Design and methods: Blood samples of 39 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer with stage I were obtained before surgery and 39 age and BMI matched health women were selected as controls.
Results: The mean age was 52±7 years (P=0.8). Circulating logOC was significantly lower in breast cancer patients compared to controls (2±1.1 mg/ml vs. 3±1.23 mg/ml, P<0.05), while logCRP levels were significantly higher in breast cancer patients than controls (0.8 vs. −0.6, P<0.05). Serum levels of logUcOC were not different between groups(6.39±0.4 mmol/l vs. 6.39±0.9 mmol/l, P=NS). OC had a positive correlation with ucOC (r=0.3, P=0.03). In contrast, CRP was not correlated with OC and ucOC (P=0.2, P=0.3, respectively).
Conclusion: We conclude that circulating OC has a potential use as a sensitive diagnostic biomarker for early detection of breast cancer.
