BSPED2016 Endocrine Nurse Endocrine Nurse Session (3 abstracts)
London.
Introduction: The valuable and innovative work carried out by Paediatric Endocrine Nurses is not always recognised. The Ipsen BSPED Endocrine Nurse prize provides this group with a valuable platform to promote expertise and best practice; not just within their group but also to the wider multi-disciplinary team.
Discussion: Paediatric Cushings syndrome (CS) is a very rare, life threatening disorder and the diagnosis/treatment of this condition is extremely challenging. Our centre is the major UK/European referral centre for children with suspected CS. Since 1982, we have investigated over 100 children and adolescents with suspected CS; 60 of these cases going on to be diagnosed with the syndrome. The aim of the project was to identify the unique role of the Paediatric Endocrine Nurse Specialist in the management of children affected by CS. It also explored how the Nurse Specialist improved and tailored the service to implement best clinical practice for the child and their family.
