Background: This study was aimed at examining the association between the fertility parameters and periodontal status of men, with reference to the bacterial culture analysis of the semen and mouth swab, seminal fluid parameters and blood serum parameters.
Method: 43 men consisting 30 infertile men as test subject, and 13 fertile men as control aged 3050 years were selected for this research. Semen samples were analysed to determine microbial presence, as well as the qualitative and quantitative features using standard methods. Blood serum samples were analyzed to determine Biochemical parameters using standard kit assays, as well as Hormonal parameters were determined by enzyme immunoassay kits.
Results: Staphylococcus aureus accounted for the highest frequency (36.7%) of bacterial isolate from both semen culture and mouth swab. There was a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the semen volume, concentration and motility of the test group compared to the control group, with a corresponding significant increase (P<0.05) in the abnormal semen morphology of the test group compared to the control.
Conclusions: The results suggest a relationship between infections in the semen and mouth, and increase in seminal fluid infections, elicits a decrease in sperm concentration, volume, motility and morphology.
