Background and aim: Subclinical hypothyrodism (SH) appears to be associated with mood and changes. The aims of this study were: i) to determine whether depression is more common in SH, and ii) to investigate the effects of L-thyroxine (LT4) therapy on depressive symptoms.

Methods: 31 patients with SH and 36 age amd BMI matched healthy controls were included. Beck and Hamilton scales were used to evaluate depression in all participants at baseline and in patients after they have reached euthyroid status by LT4 therapy.

Results: TSH was higher and FT4 was lower in patients with SH (P<0.0001 and P=0.001 respectively). Scores of depression scales were similar between the patients with SH and controls. LT4 treatment resulted in an increase in FT4 and decrease in TSH, Beck or Hamilton scores did not change significantly after treatment.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that depressive symptoms are more common in patients with SH and that achievement of euthyroid status by LT4 does not have an effect on depression.

Declaration of interest: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest that could be perceived as prejudicing the impartiality of the research project.
