Recent studies have suggested that upper body adiposity is associated with major cardiovascular risk (CVR). However most of them were conducted in obese patients. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of neck circumference (NC) in a non-obese Brazilian adult population, considering that it would be a simple and time-saving measurement to identify patients with worse cardiometabolic profile. We evaluated 279 non-obese Brazilian adults [86 men (♂), 193 women (♀)], who had no known major medical conditions and were not receiving any medication living in Northeast of Brazil. Main anthropometric parameters evaluated were: BMI (kg/square meter): ♂25.0±2.8/♀24.9±2.9; NC (cm): ♂37.8±2.0/♀33.0±1.8; waist circumference (WC) (cm): ♂89.5±8.0/♀85.6±8.0; scapular circumference (SC): ♂95.1±9.1/♀87.5±5.2; systolic (SBP): ♂125.6±14.8/♀118.0±13.3, and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg) (DBP): ♂81.8±8.3/♀78.7±8.3; HDL (mg/dl): ♂43.5±11.7/♀53.0±12.6; triglycerides (mg/dl): ♂130.0±76.8/♀107.0±52.2; fasting glucose (mg/dl): ♂92.7±10.7/♀91.4±13.4; fasting insulin (uU/ml): ♂7.2±4.0/♀9.0±7.5; total cholesterol (mg/dl): ♂175.4±37.4/♀182.7±34.0; LDL (mg/dl): ♂104.6±30.7/♀107.8±30.2; HOMA-IR: ♂1.7±1.0/♀2.0±1.7. We found association (Pearson’s correlation, P<0,05) between NC and: WC (r=0.48), AC (r=0.43), SC (r=0.68), BMI (r=0.35), SBP (r=0.34), DBP (r=0.27), tryglicerides (r=0.24), HDL (r=−0.35. These data suggest that NC could have a potential role in the clinical evaluation of cardiometabolic risk even in non-obese subjects.
