Background: Metabolic syndrome has been introduced to increase the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our aim of this study was to investigate the relation for normal fasting plasma glucose levels and metabolic syndrome in normoglycemic adults.

Methods: The study subjects consisted of 636 individuals who visited the Center for Health Promotion in Pusan National University Hospital for a medical checkup in 2002 to 2005. Among 636 subjects, 469 subject who don’t have metabolic syndrome and had normal fasting plasma glucose, were included and followed up for 3years. We measured fasting glucose, lipid profiles blood pressure and their metabolic components.

Results: As the quartile of plasma glucose, 3 year follow-up incidence of the metabolic syndrome was increased. Logistic regression analysis adjusting for sex, age, alcohol drinking status, smoking status, and physical activity showed that the odds ratio(95% confidence Interval, P-value) of each plasma glucose quartile was 1.127(0.549~2.314, P=0.744), 2.131(1.121~4.051, P=0.021), 3.235(1.682~6.224, P=0.000), respectively

Conclusion: As shown above, These results showed that normal fasting plasma glucose level was closely related to the incidence of the metabolic syndrome.

Declaration of interest: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest that could be perceived as prejudicing the impartiality of the research project.
