Objective study was to determine the prevalence of overweight, obesity, type 2 diabetes.
Methods: The study in hospital of Vlora was carried out between January 2008 and Dicembre of 2009.
The total study involved 284 patients, 167 women and 137 men, mean age 4070 years whose height and body weight were evaluated.
They were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and were tested in addition to anthropometric evaluations.
Each survey comprised a general practitioner, a nurse and a medical secretary. Body weight and height were measured.
Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of height (in meters).
All statistical analyses were performed for women and men separately.
Results: The prevalence of diabetes showed a steady increase up to the age group 6069 years, after which the prevalence fell. Overall, the overweight rate was 34.2, 33.5% in women and 36.3% in men; obesity rate was 23.7, 32.4% in women and 14.1% in men. The prevalence of obesity showe steady increase up to the age group 6069 years in men and 5059 years in women.
Conclusion: We have reported for the first time the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes and their association with each other and with age and gender in a hospital of Vlora, a city in Albania.
