Objective: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR1) are known to be related to thyroid tumorigenesis, but data are limited about their relationship with insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and IGF1 receptor. The aim of this study was to clarify the role of VEGF, VEGFR-1, IGF1 and IGF1 receptor in thyroid tumorigenesis.
Methods: We examined 40 patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) and compared them with 25 patients who had pathological diagnosis of nodular goiter (NG) after thyroidectomy. Immunohistochemical analysis for VEGF, VEGFR-1, IGF1 and IGF1 receptor were carried out in the paraffin-blocks of thyroidectomy materials of the patients.
Results: The scores of the immunostainings of VEGF, VEGFR-1, IGF1 and IGF1 receptor were higher in the patients with DTC than in the patients with NG. Only the expression of VEGFR-1 was found to be related to the lymph node metastasis at the time of surgery.
Conclusion: VEGFR-1 expression may be an important index for the presence of lymph node metastasis at the time of thyroidectomy, but expressions of VEGF, IGF1 and IGF1 receptor do not seem to be related to the tumour capsule invasion, multicentrity or lymph node metastasis.
