Objective: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is mainly responsible for the high mortality and morbidity in type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of CVD in type 2 diabetes.

Methods: A total of 752 patients were included. History and physical examination were recorded. Laboratory tests included fasting blood sugar (FBS), glycated hemoglobin, lipid profile, uric acid, serum creatinine and microalbuminuria. In patients without history or physical examinations regards to CVD, 12 lead resting electrocardiogram and exercise stress test was performed.

Results: The prevalence of CVD was 20.1%. It was associated with age (P<0.001), duration of diabetes (P<0.001), hypertension (P<0.001), diabetic retinopathy (P=0.01), metabolic syndrome (P=0.04), renal insufficiency (P<0.001), triglyceride (P=0.02), HDL (P=0.04), uric acid (P=0.02) and triglyceride to HDL ratio (P=0.04). Using multinomial logistic regression model, age, metabolic syndrome and HDL were significant independent predictors of CVD.

Conclusion: The high prevalence of CVD in Iranian type 2 diabetic patients was found to highlight the need for more improvement in metabolic risk factors of CVD.

Keywords: CVD, CHD, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome.
