We have investigated the leptin production by total and regional fat mass in 32 overweight postmenopausal women as well as the relation between serum leptin levels, total body fat mass and body fat distribution variables. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated in kg/m2. Serum concentrations of leptin were evaluated by RIA. Body composition trunk/total, arms+legs/total+legs/trunk, android/gynoid ratios were assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The relationship between leptin concentrations and body fat distribution variables were investigated by Pearson correlation test. Serum leptin levels at the baseline positively correlated with BMI (r=0.701, P<0.0001), total body fat mass (r=0.683, P<0.0001). No significant correlation was observed between leptin and trunk/total, arms+legs/total +legs/trunk. According to these results we have concluded that total body fat mass have impact on leptin concentrations while the body fat distribution does not affect leptin levels in overweight postmenopausal women.
