Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism is associated with insulin resistance and reduced pancreatic beta cell function. Approximately 40% of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism have impaired glucose tolerance. This observational study sought to show improvement in insulin resistance after parathyroidectomy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.
Methods: Insulin resistance and pancreatic beta-cell function was calculated before and 12 weeks after parathyroidectomy in 16 patients. Insulin resistance was calculated using the homeostatic model assessment.
Results: Post parathyroidectomy, there was a reduction in Insulin resistance in 12 (75%) patients and increased beta cell function in 7 (44%) patients.
Conclusion: Our data shows a reduction in insulin resistance in a significant proportion of our study group.
