Introduction: Adiposity has been well known to influence blood pressure. Adipokines are peptides secreted from the adipose tissue. TNF-alpha and IL-6 are pro-inflammatory adipokines while adiponectin and leptin have been known to be influencing vascular function. The influence of adipokines on blood pressure is not yet known. Our hypothesis was that all adipokines positively influenced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Patients and methods: One hundred and ninety-three young women (mean age: 35.3, 95% CI 34.636.0 years, mean BMI: 27.3, 95% CI 26.528.2 kg/m2) had anthropometry, fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, lipid profile, hs-C reactive protein and adipokines TNF-alpha, Interleukin-6, adiponectin and leptin measured.
Results: The bivariate correlation between the blood pressure measures and the adipokines were as follows:

After adjusting for age, weight, Townsends index (measure of social deprivation), ethnicity, smoking history, alcohol consumption, fasting glucose, serum cholesterol, triglycerides and serum C-reactive protein, the independent influence of the adipokines over blood pressure were found to be as follows:

Conclusion: Adipokines had independent influence over both SBP and DBP. The pro-inflammatory adipokines had more influence on both these measures independent of the individuals body weight and inflammatory state measured by serum C-reactive protein.
