J Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, received his medical degree with honors and a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of North Carolina in 1981. He performed his clinical training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and rose through the ranks at Harvard Medical School to become an associate professor of medicine and chief of the Thyroid Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr Jameson began his tenure at Northwestern University Medical School in 1993 as chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Molecular Medicine, a position he held for seven years. In 2000, he was named Irving S. Cutter Professor of Medicine and chair of the Department of Medicine, a position he held until 2007, when he was appointed as Dean of Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

A prolific researcher and writer, Dr Jameson has authored more than 300 scientific articles and chapters. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Science, the Journal of Clinical Investigation and several other endocrinology journals. He is an editor of ‘Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine’, the most widely used medical text worldwide, and coauthor of ‘DeGroot and Jameson’s Endocrinology’.

Dr Jameson’s research focuses on molecular endocrinology. As a breakthrough investigator in his field, he identified the genetic basis of more than a dozen different hormonal disorders. His laboratory studies explored the fundamental mechanisms that control the transcription of endocrine genes. He also led efforts to bridge laboratory studies with clinical endocrinology using genetic models to investigate the pathophysiology of endocrine disorders.

Among a number of professional distinctions and honors, Dr Jameson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the oldest learned society in academia, and the Institute of Medicine, established by the National Academy of Sciences to honor professional achievement in the health sciences. He served as president of the Endocrine Society, an organization with more than 10 000 members, and has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is a member of the medical advisory board of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a Director of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr Jameson has received several distinguished awards, including the Oppenheimer and Koch Awards from the Endocrine Society, and the Van Meter Award from the American Thyroid Association.
