Sheue-yann Cheng, PhD, is the chief of the Gene Regulation Section, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an advisor for women scientists at the Center for Cancer Research, NCI. She is on the editorial boards of Thyroid, Endocrinology, and Expert Review of Endocrinology and Metabolism. She currently serves as a regular member of the NIH Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology study session.
Dr Cheng received her PhD from the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, and her fellowship training at the University of Chicago and the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Her work focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action. She has created mouse models for human disease, including follicular thyroid carcinoma, resistance to thyroid hormone, pituitary tumors, and dwarfism. These models provide a platform for translation of basic research to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. For her work, she has received several awards including the prestigious Sidney H Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award of the American Thyroid Association, the Charles Harkin Award of NCI, the NIH Merit Award for outstanding achievements, and the Abbott Thyroid Research Clinical Fellowship Mentor Award of the Endocrine Society.
