SFEBES2007 Young Endocrinologists Session A successful research career (4 abstracts)
University of Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom.
The decision to undertake a PhD launches you on a path of discovery, but not necessarily scientific discovery!
You discover a lot about yourself. Can you survive the failed experiments, the confusion about your goals and the uncertainty about a future career?
You discover a lot about working in research groups. Sometimes there is stress with your supervisor, sometimes with other members of the team.
The problem as you go through your PhD is that you dont know what you dont know. This discussion will provide suggestions on how to plan effective experiments, how to manage your time, and how to manage your supervisor! It will also give advice on writing your thesis and tips for your viva. Throughout your PhD you need to consider when and where to present your results so that you are heading for a successful research career.
In summary, dont reinvent the wheel by falling into traps which make your project difficult. Instead you should aim for a research career which is inspiring, fun and addictive.
