Dr Forrest studies the role of thyroid hormone in development. He is particularly interested in the genes that mediate these functions, including those encoding thyroid hormone receptors and deiodinase enzymes. Recent findings have revealed novel functions for these genes in sensory systems.

Dr Forrest is a Senior Investigator at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland. He received his PhD from Glasgow University, studying oncogenes in feline leukemia. He became interested in thyroid hormone during postdoctoral research at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm and the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, New Jersey. Dr Forrest was a tenured associate professor at the Department of Human Genetics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York before moving to the NIH in 2004.

Dr Forrest’s work has been recognised through honours that include the Merck Prize of the European Thyroid Association, the Outstanding Faculty Achievement Award of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Van Meter Award of the American Thyroid Association.
