B Spiegelman, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, United States. Abstract

A professor of Cell Biology at Dana-Farber and Harvard Medical School, Spiegelman earned his undergraduate degree with highest honours from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and his PhD in biochemistry from Princeton University. He completed his postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Professor Spiegelman has received numerous honours, including election to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been elected as a Foreign Member of European Molecular Biology Organization. In 2002 he received the Berson Award from the American Physiology Society, the Heinrich Weiland Prize in Lipid Metabolism from the University of Munich in 1997, and in 2003, the Bristol Myers Squibb Award for Outstanding Achievement in Metabolic Research, and the Rolf Luft Medal in Endocrinology from the Karolinska Institute.

Professor Spiegelman lives in Newton with his wife Susan Loffredo, a career counsellor at Northeastern University. He has two daughters, Gina and Eliza.
