Purpose: To evaluate the level of intellect according to tests data in the regions with iodine deficiency.
Methods: In the frame the Thyromobil project that was held during 2003-2005y in 18 regions of Russian Federation were done standartized epidemiologic research. The research included clinical examination, palpation thyroid, ultrasonic examination of thyroid, definitions of ioduria. We used Cattell test, free of cultural influence (Culture Fair Intelligence Test, CFIT), modification CF 2A (for children from 8 to 12 years) to detect the IQ level (the index of intellectual development). We examinated 3902 school children, 2078 school children were tested by Cattell test.
Results: In the majority of regions the iodine supply wast lower than the normal level.
The mediane of iodine concentration in urina was within variabilities from 23.2 to 88.9 mkg/l. This indicated the light or medium degree of iodine deficiency. In some regions was found the destrics with hard iodine deficiency. The frequency of goiter according to ultrasonic data was from 3.9 to 42.6%. The average IQ index according to the results of test were from 77 to 93.2 (and only in some districts was higer than 95).
Conclusions: The iodine deficiency was found in the most regions, at least in light degree. Besides, the IQ level in most of this regions was lower than optimal level, but didnt go out the low bound of IQ diaposon, which appropriated the light parabound degree of intellectual insufficiency.
