John Connell graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow (with commendation) in 1977. After initial general medical training he was appointed Registrar in Endocrinology in the Western Infirmary, Glasgow; in 1983 he became Clinical Scientist within the MRC Blood Pressure Unit and Senior Registrar in Endocrinology. In 1986 he was awarded a MRC Travelling Fellowship and spent eighteen months in Melbourne working in the Howard Florey Institute for Experimental Physiology and Medicine. He returned to Glasgow as Consultant Physician and senior Clinical Scientist in the MRC Blood Pressure Unit in 1988. In 1994 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Medicine and in 1996 joined the University of Glasgow as Professor of Endocrinology.
He has clinicaland research interests in the renin/angiontensin/aldosterone system and,in particular, in the role of aldosterone in hypertension. His research group, which carries out both basic and clinical studies, is funded by the Medical Research Council. He has additional interests in the metabolic regulation of vascular function and in the interaction between insulin and vascular endothelium.
