Eberhard Nieschlag studied medicine at the Universities of Bonnand Munich and biochemistry at University College London. He went on to specialize in internal medicine and endocrinology at the University Hospitals of Mainz and Düsseldorf. He has also conducted research at the MRC Clinical Research Unit for Reproductive Endocrinology in Edinburgh (1968) and at the Reproduction Research Branch of the NIH, Bethesda, MD (1971–2). In 1976 he became Head of the Department of Endocrinology at the University Women’s Hospital in Münster and from 1980 to 1988 was Director of the Max-Planck Clinical Research Unit for Reproductive Medicine in Münster. Since 1988 he has been Director of the Institute of Reproductive Medicine of the University of Münster. The Institute is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research in Male Reproduction and a Training Centre of the European Academy of Andrology. Professor Nieschlag was President of the German Society of Endocrinology, the International Society of Andrology, the European Academy of Andrology and the German Society of Reproductive Medicine and is currently President of the German Society of Andrology. His clinical and research activities have focused on reproductive endocrinology and andrology, testosterone, treatment of infertility, the aging male and hormonal male contraception.
