Jayne Franklyn qualified in medicine with honours at the University of Birmingham in 1979. After basic training in medicine and endocrinology, she was appointed Sheldon Research Fellow and MRC Training Fellow to pursue studies of thyroid hormone receptor binding, leading to MD in 1985. After appointment as Clinical Lecturer she proceeded to PhD with studies of TSH gene regulation. She was subsequently appointed Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellowship in Birmingham, then Clinical Senior Lecturer, achieving promotion to Professor of Medicine in Birmingham in 1995. She has been Associate Dean for the Graduate School since 2002. Throughout her research career she has maintained a strong interest, not only in the pathogenesis of thyroid diseases and thyroid hormone action, but also in the management of thyroid disorders and their long-term consequences in terms of morbidity and mortality. Highlights have been the award of the RCP Goulstonian Lectureship, the Society for Endocrinology Medal Lectureship, an ICE Plenary Lectureship and the American Thyroid Association Keynote Lectureship. She is Senior Editor of Clinical Endocrinology, member of the Clinical and BES Committees of the Society for Endocrinology, the Endocrinology SAC of the JCHMT, Clinical Interview Panel of the Wellcome Trust and committee member of the British and American Thyroid Associations.
