Clinical outcome and Implications for training in thyroid surgery in a district general Hospital

Objective: To assess the volume of work outcome and training opportunity in a
district general Hospital and compare with the BAES recommendations
Methods: Retrospective study, Patients identified by theatre records, pathology
records
Results: 112 patients operated across the trust over 2 years
5% overall significant complication rate
29% of operations done by registrars supervised
1% recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.
Conclusions: Good volume of work and the has acceptable standards according to BAES recommendations.
The training in DGH may not be suitable unit for HST but changes can be made by posting registrars across trusts to increase their workload
