Jeffrey S Flier is the George C Reisman Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Chief Academic Officer and Harvard Faculty Dean for Academic Affairs at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr Flier is a graduate of the City College of New York (1968) and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1972). After training in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital (1972–74), he pursued clinical endocrinology and research in the area of receptor biology at the National Institutes of Health. In 1978, Dr Flier joined the faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, where his positions have included Chief of the Diabetes Unit at Beth Israel Hospital, Vice Chair for Research of the Department of Medicine (1998–2002) and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology (1990–2001).
Dr Flier's research has produced major insights into the molecular mechanism of insulin action, the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance in human disease, and the molecular pathophysiology of obesity. He has authored more than 200 scholarly papers and reviews, and has held numerous editorial positions, including the Board of Consulting Editors if Science Magazine since 2001. Dr Flier is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2001), and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences (2003). He received the Eli Lilly Award of the American Diabetes Association for Outstanding Scientific Achievement in 1991, and delivered the Astwood Lecture at the Endocrine Society national meeting in June, 2003. His NIH Grant DK 28082 was awarded MERIT status by the NIDDK Council in 1992, and again in 2000.
