Ilpo Huhtaniemi received his MD (1972) and PhD (1974) degrees at University of Helsinki, Finland, did his postdoctoral training in the US (UCSF and NIH, Bethesda), and has been a visiting scientist in Germany (University of Heidelberg) and Scotland (MRC Reproductive Biology Unit, Edinburgh). He has a clinical specialty in chemical pathology. Since 1986 he has been Professor and Chairman of Physiology at University of Turku, Finland.

He recently moved to this country and, since April 2002, has held a Chair in Reproductive Biology at the Medical Faculty of Imperial College, London. He is a former President of The International Society of Andrology (1997-2001), and is currently the Chief Managing Editor of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. Besides his post in London he is heading an Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence, a Research Programme on Male Reproductive Health, at the University of Turku.

His research interests range from laboratory diagnostics in clinical reproductive endocrinology to basic research on molecular aspects of gonadotrophin secretion and action. He also has long-term interests in experimental and clinical studies on male contraception, hormone-dependent cancer, and the endocrinology of male ageing.
