Roberto Di Lauro is Professor of Human Genetics at the School of Medicine of the University of Naples 'Federico II'. He is also responsible for the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Stazione Zoologica 'Anton Dohrn' (Naples). He was visiting associate from 1974 to 1978 and visiting scientist from 1984 to 1986 at the National Cancer Institute, NIH (Bethesda, USA). From 1986 to 1991 he was Group Leader at the EMBL (Heidelberg). He was President of the Italian Society of Biophysics and Molecular Biology (SIBBM) from 1998 to 2001 and member of the European Thyroid Association (Executive Committee member from 1992-1994). He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). He was nominated in 1999 Fogarty Scholar in residence by the National Institutes of Health, USA. In 2000 he was given the Merck price from the European Thyroid Association. In 2000 he was nominated for the Spinoza Professorship at the University of Amsterdam. He is Chair of the Fellowship Committee of the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) from 2001 to 2003. He has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals. His scientific interests are focused on the mechanisms of cell type-specific gene expression and on the molecular genetics of development.
